To test the valley's climate, we have planted twenty-one varieties of the European wine grape, Vitis vinifera. The first block of grapes was planted in the spring of 2006 by Jane Ellis, whose family has farmed this land for four generations, her husband, Jeff Backstrand, and their daughter Sarah. Three more varietals were added in the spring of 2007, another three (plus two new Riesling clones) were planted in 2008, and two more in the spring of 2010. We had our our first small crop of grapes in the fall of 2009, and a nice harvest of Riesling and Chardonnay in October, 2010.
