Pinot Gris (Pinot Grigio in Italy) can produce high quality, medium to full bodied white wines. A genetic mutation of Pinot Noir, the grape is unusual in the range of colors that are seen in the ripe grapes. Even in the same cluster, grapes can exhibit a range of colors from greenish red, brownish, pink or yellow. Northern Italy and Alsace are well known sources of high quality Pinot Gris (as is Oregon west of the Cascades). Pinot Gris is generally a fairly light white with floral tones and hints of lemon.
