Barbera

currants, blackberries, low in tannins

Barbera

Barbera is an ancient Italian variety with the highest quality grapes coming from the Piedmont region. This grape is popular with growers due to its vigor, its ability to thrive in a wide variety of soils, and its resistance to fungal diseases.

Barbera grapes are naturally high in acid, which is retained very well even in hot climates. They are relatively low in tannins, resulting in wines that are a deep, purplish black in their youth, but which tend to brown early with age. For these reasons, Barbera is frequently used as a blender to contribute gorgeous color and high acidity. Vines that are carefully cropped can yield attractive varietal wines, especially when enhanced by the vanilla and smoky flavors from barrel aging.
